Edward is Chief Architect for UK Government, working within the Government Digital Service (GDS). With more than a decade working in digital roles as a Civil Servant, from architecting and coding systems to owning the technology workforce strategy and leading a cloud transformation.
Throughout Edward’s career he’s been investing in growing digital and data professionals around him, including taking responsibility for the department’s Software Engineering profession, creating and growing degree apprenticeship, internship and graduate schemes, and hiring hundreds of technical staff from school leavers to experienced hires. He still mentors future digital leaders, delivers technical training for cross-Government groups, and presents at international conferences.
Edward’s background is primarily in Defence, including architecting and building complex systems with the highest security requirements and threat-to-life in the event of failure. This included leading software engineering teams to embrace DevOps, Cloud and good engineering practices, as well as incubating innovation projects which turned into multi-million pound investments and core platforms.
After a secondment to a global hyperscale Cloud provider, Edward joined CDDO to lead the UK Government’s Cloud Strategy, which included refreshing the flagship Cloud First Policy. Now Government’s Chief Architect, he is responsible for the Enterprise Architecture of Government, Government’s partnerships with digital suppliers and how we support CTOs and CIOs in Government to manage their technology organisations.
Alongside Edward’s Masters Degree in Computer Science, he is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Manager, and has received two awards for leadership. Outside work Edward has two young children, cycles, and teaches first aid and lifesaving.
