  • What you’ll be doing:

    Bookkeepers are responsible for maintaining an organisation’s key accounting records, known as ledgers. Day-to-day activities include recording transactions such as income and outgoings, and posting them to various accounts. Being a broad and varied role, a Bookkeeper job description should emphasise the need for a strong sense of time management and organisational skills, and with exposure to many aspects of the accounting.

    A typical breakdown of your role would be:

    • Recording transactions  income and outgoings, and posting them to ledgers on Sage Accounts
    • Processing payments
    • Conducting daily banking activities
    • Producing various financial reports
    • Reconciling reports to third-party records such as bank statements.
    • Preparing employee wages
    • Managing employee expense claims
    • Helping the Finance Manager with administrative duties and preparing yearly accounts
    • Completing VAT returns
    • Maintaining the company’s financials for the Apprenticeship Levy Scheme

    What skills and experience do you need?

     

    Essential skills:

    • Must be able to hold an SC Security Clearance
    • Good attention to detail to enter correct data into financial records and recognise errors
    • Mathematics skills for accurate record-keeping
    • Administrative skills for filing financial records
    • Computer literacy, especially familiarity with spreadsheets, and accounting software such as Microsoft Office, Excel and Sage
    • Multi-tasking and organisational skills to manage different financial duties, including the ability to prioritise tasks in order to meet deadlines
    • Interpersonal and customer service skills for dealing with customers, suppliers and other employees in the company
    • Communication skills, including the ability to explain complex financial matters in accessible terms
    • To be honest, discreet and trustworthy
    • Ideally qualified to AAT Bookkeeping level
