What you’ll be doing:
Bookkeepers are responsible for maintaining an organisation’s key accounting records, known as ledgers. Day-to-day activities include recording transactions such as income and outgoings, and posting them to various accounts. Being a broad and varied role, a Bookkeeper job description should emphasise the need for a strong sense of time management and organisational skills, and with exposure to many aspects of the accounting.
A typical breakdown of your role would be:
- Recording transactions income and outgoings, and posting them to ledgers on Sage Accounts
- Processing payments
- Conducting daily banking activities
- Producing various financial reports
- Reconciling reports to third-party records such as bank statements.
- Preparing employee wages
- Managing employee expense claims
- Helping the Finance Manager with administrative duties and preparing yearly accounts
- Completing VAT returns
- Maintaining the company’s financials for the Apprenticeship Levy Scheme
What skills and experience do you need?
Essential skills:
- Must be able to hold an SC Security Clearance
- Good attention to detail to enter correct data into financial records and recognise errors
- Mathematics skills for accurate record-keeping
- Administrative skills for filing financial records
- Computer literacy, especially familiarity with spreadsheets, and accounting software such as Microsoft Office, Excel and Sage
- Multi-tasking and organisational skills to manage different financial duties, including the ability to prioritise tasks in order to meet deadlines
- Interpersonal and customer service skills for dealing with customers, suppliers and other employees in the company
- Communication skills, including the ability to explain complex financial matters in accessible terms
- To be honest, discreet and trustworthy
- Ideally qualified to AAT Bookkeeping level
